A Wild Trip on Salvia

By Whitney W. of Leitchfield, KY

I regularly abused drugs for nearly 13 years, starting at the age of 13. Methamphetamine became my drug of choice at the age of 17, and it was this drug that I abused the hardest. Over the years, I had been given the opportunity to experiment with Ecstasy and acid but never found the right time to do them. Low and behold at the age of 23, however, I did come across a drug called salvia and decided that I wanted to try it; this was my experience with salvia.

My cousin lived in Fort Campbell, KY, and would regularly call me about having tried a drug called salvia. She said she smoked it in a pipe as if smoking marijuana and that the buzz was somewhat similar except for the fact that she would sometimes hallucinate. She then asked if I wanted to try it. Living nearly two hours away from where she lived, I told her I was not willing to make a special trip to pick it up, but told her to bring some of it the next time she came to visit me.

I believe it was a rather hot summer day when my cousin came to visit. My son, who was about one-year old at the time happened to be staying with his grandmother for a few hours, so when my cousin showed up with the salvia, I thought to myself, "this is the perfect time to try it out." My fiance, whom I lived with, said that he was willing to give the drug a try to.

My cousin loaded the pipe with a very small amount; probably under a half-gram of the drug. My fiance and I hit the pipe one to two times a piece and then waited. At first, we kept saying we didn't feel nothing, but then all at once it "hit" my fiance. He said the wallpaper was peeling off the walls and that he was somewhat scared of my cousin's husband because he didn't recognize him. I believe he even tried to hit my cousin's husband.

At this point, I think I was still somewhat coherent; however, it didn't take long for the salvia to "kick in." All I remember is that I was sitting on my bed, and all of a sudden I felt as if dinosaurs were chasing after me. I never actually saw them, but I remember thinking to myself, "if I can only get across this bridge, then the dinosaurs won't get me." I tried and tried my hardest to get across this "bridge" that I had created in my mind, but as hard as I tried, it seemed I never could get across it. I was literally dragging myself across the bedroom floor as if trying to get across a bridge. Finally, I made it from my bedroom to my living room, and it was at this point that I think I stopped "tripping."

My body felt totally exhausted after doing salvia. It literally felt as if I had no energy. I remember that I took about a two-hour nap, woke up and went to my fiance's mother's house. My fiance took a nap too, then woke up and went fishing. Needless to say, salvia is a drug that we have never had the "want" to do again. We have never had any cravings for it either, nor do we recommend doing it.

When my cousin bought salvia, she did so at a gas station located near the Fort Campbell army base. At the time, it was completely legal, and she said guys and girls in the army were doing it all the time. I have no clue as to why the drug was legal, nor can I imagine doing the drug while driving. I think driving on the drug would be far worse than drinking and driving.
